Moving my thoughts away from Facebook to my stagnate blog is an attempt to "be happy," "fight right," and not "dump" on those relationships that I do have. Currently I'm reading "The Happiness Project" by Gretchen Rubin and choose to find happiness in my relationships.

Recently, I returned to my THP book and began reading chapter 2 "Remember Love." Gretchen's focuses on marital relations but I believe much in this chapter is relevant for all relationships. This chapter is broken down into Quit Nagging, Don't Expect Praise or Appreciation, Fight Right, No Dumping, and Give Proofs of Love. Her No Dumping section resonated with me and I realized I continually dump on my facebook "family."

This chapter provides me with a mirror in which I see myself dumping my educational frustrations on my limited community of listeners. Her next Chapter "Work" (chp. 3) helps me see why I dump. Gretchen explains her discovery of living right - finding what sort of life long task completed her. This discovery came while she considered what she likes to do in her free time. So I reflect. What do I do in my free time? Designing, learning and continually researching education: what works, what doesn't, what others say. Clearly researching and writing about Education feels right to me. I like to write about what feels good and what feels right, growth and non-growth in education because Education feels right to me.

My next, educational rant, status update often occurs to me well before I write it and usually in the middle of the night when I'm awoken and my mind won't turn off. I mull negative and positive ideas over and identify them as really important. Then I get antsy to write this brainstorms down. So antsy that I don't care about type-os, omitted words, poor phrasing etc.. I just have to get whatever I've written - out there. It's so important - lol. When I'm writing the post I am excited and on a high but once it's posted it's usually a let down because no one comments - generally - or if I ask for comments they just don't get to the heart of what I'm saying. In all honesty, the most likely don't care or it's beyond their scope, not their focus.

I equate my dumping actions with a need to express my insecurities probably about my own educational failures and frustrations, a need for validation of my educational successes, as well as a need for someone to "take more interest in my work" (Rubin, p.52). I think at this point my facebook readers, for the most part, aren't equipped to give that sort of support in this subject that I seek, are to overwhelmed with their own pressing issues to "spend hours pumping up my self-confidence" (Rubin, p. 53) or really aren't up for playing "the role of a female [not sure I completely agree with the gender distinction - but] writer" (Rubin, p.53). My conclusion - on facebook I'm not writing for an educational community, for the most part, they don't want to be my writing partner.

Quite a long rant to explain my purpose. LOL

So for now... This blog is my attempt to set aside 15 min. a day to what feels good, feels bad, feels right in a process of educational growth.
The Prompt:

Long day of harvesting and preparing for the market. Kat's dad is coming
with me to the market tomorrow, which I believe is a first for him.
Should be fun.

My Response

The market, they are farmers, what is the market really for. Lots of crafters hold a booth, wonder what the farmer's think. Did they begin this trend? Who is Kat and why does she want to take her father to the market? shop, sell, I love going to the market? What are they going to do at the market? I've ONly browsed the market with Marge, she is such a conundrum, a cross between city and farm girl - how bizarre hmm my first time at the market - was it when she bought the pie - why did I like it? Seemed so European, so eclectic not so Farmerish...but oh so farmerish - kinda weird. Is my European yearning really a yearning for American Farming roots. Kinda weird, items, garments we call "Euro" style and pay out the nose for (skirts in particular) that are so modern and "city" popular is patchwork of old, which is classic American culture, "low" or "common" culture ...patchwork quilts, patched up clothes recycling, a practice of the impoverished done to extend the life of a cloth....kinda weird....

The public sphere - the "ideal" place for political discourse. What is a public sphere? According to E McLuskie, "A public sphere requires participation with policy consequences collectively agreed to--usually, the consequences part falls into black holes of sorts."

So why isn't facebook - so ideal? I suppose the argument is that since the policy consequences of any discourse is not specifically outlined - their are no outlined rules for the communicative game - that it is a breading ground for both manipulation, and propaganda as honest communication is limited to who is in control leaving the non-controlling side at risk for expression.

BUT! What else do we have? A platform to educate more widespread audiences than one would reach if merely teaching in academia. The opportunity to create change while utilizing facebook is available if one is tactful. It's a place where all walks of life are meeting and politically conversing more and more across communities.

As Call Me Taft writes,

"New media plays many roles in American politics. They can act as a venue for self-expression or a vehicle for voters to reach out to politicians. They can also offer politicians a way of making more information available to the public at minimal cost. Finally, new media provide a platform for political discourse on the web among the public, journalists, and candidates. The various technologies that make up new media can affect politics in any or all of these ways."

So new media offers opportunities.

So what??????...................The problem with our society is that we fail to create shared understandings of the creation and maintenance of social ills and agreed upon courses of action for managing said 'ills plaguing our country. Facebook, though limited, provides us with a better avenue to clarify political perspectives and maybe move participants a step closer to social resolutions with which the majority can live with.

Within facebook folks seem to be more comfortable with sharing what they do understand and their disagreements with current policies of action.

I wonder if it offers "the general public" hope?

Rambling #2..........

something about the voices of boys - how do I raise my boys so that they feel comfortable sharing and realize they've been heard...

Rambline #3...Why Spanish Language will not overtake English - yet another long paper to be written. Having to do with the fact the English is such a diverse, descriptive language with multiple words available for describing similar situations giving the speaker the ability to more specifically depict...not that English isn't changing with the influence of Spanish speakers (or any other language for that matter)Amievoltairehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04500278670109123501noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4726878218693564974.post-89088126136378164712010-04-10T06:10:00.000-07:002010-04-10T06:12:52.347-07:00Opposing Voice
An Opposing Voice in a Sea of Distention

Sometimes to move 2 steps towards where we want to be, towards what might work better for ALL-most ALL of us, we have to drive 90 miles out of our way because there are roadblocks, pot holes, earthquakes, and idot drivers who cause accidents. Should we fund everyone's health insurance no! But! our current system is SPIT!

Currently in our system, we're paying an outrageous price to stay alive (and who is the end benifactor of that cost??? Are the those drug company, and hospital recipients even American?) and is "to stay alive" a fundamental right - Life!~ (liberty and the pursuit). My history tells me -YES! I'm all for a health care overhaul. Do I want to live like Socialist Russia or Red China - or course not. Besides, this country, most likely, won't go there because we're "happily" a 2 party system and in 2 years everything will be repealed anyway.

So why go there??? Maybe, just maybe - people will begin to question the current system and in the longrun SOME change that we can ALL-most ALL agree on WILL happen. P.S. I'm strongly against - drugs, drug companies, doctors who solve problems with drugs (or any other band aid -get them hooked on care- solution). I'm against a "solve the problem after the fact philosophy," I'm against letting people spend their lives at McDonald's and then expecting ME to pay to fix their heart. BUT!!! there has got to be some balance. We happily send aid to Timbuktu because they were hit by a hurricane - despite the fact that they live in a "Hurricanes WILL happen area - and they were living in poverty to begin with" yet we fight like heck when our local volunteer firefighter - with no benefits - needs health care help after he damaged his lungs when voluntarily pulling people from 911 ash, and now can no longer work because of his deteriorated health. Go figure.

I understand the argument "Why should I help immunize my out of work neighbor's children who is just having children to get a monthly gov. payment that will help them buy 20 cans of cat food and 2 packs of cigarettes - oh the cat food was for their children to eat???" Why should I help them? Oh because not helping them means I who was immunized and the immunity has worn off will be exposed?" Is it fair - NO@! But is if fair that a double income family working 2-3-4-5 jobs can't afford "preventative health care" to stay healthy so they can keep making money for the man. NO!

Where's the balance - What does it take to take 2 steps in the right direction - a direction that WILL work for All - most all of us....?????. Do I want to live like Socialist Russia or Red China - or course not. This country won't go there because in 2 years everything will be repealed anyway. So why go there??? Maybe just maybe - people will begin to question the current system and in the longrun SOME change that we can ALL-most all agree on WILL happen. P.S. I'm strongly against - drugs, drug companies, doctors who solve problems with drugs and a "solve the problem after the fact philosophy," I'm against letting people spend their lives at McDonald's and then expecting ME to pay to fix their heart. But there's got to be some balance. We happily send aid to Timbuktu because they were hit by a hurricane - despite the fact that they live in a "Hurricanes WILL happen area" yet we fight like heck when our local volunteer firefighter - with no benis - needs help from his pulling people from 911 ash. Go figure. I understand the argument "should I help immunize my out of work neighbor's children if not helping them means I who was immunized and the immunity has worn off will be exposed?" NO -

Where's the balance - What does it take to go 2 steps in the right direction - a direction that WILL work for All-most ALL of us....????? What will it take to get you to question what we have? What will it take to get you to ACT, to get you to move us towards a better solution???Amievoltairehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04500278670109123501noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4726878218693564974.post-75423136723307501282010-03-01T08:38:00.002-08:002010-03-01T08:58:57.319-08:00Spring Giveaway
Congratulations to Clenna

#42 Winner of the Spring Giveaway to
Amievoltaire.Etsy.Com

And a big THANK YOU to everyone who entered.

Didn't win?

I promotion of my feature on IndieHandmade.com

I'm planning a second Spring Giveaway to run March 6th through March 27th.

Be sure to check back!

Amievoltairehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04500278670109123501noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4726878218693564974.post-34212953167137083882010-02-17T10:23:00.000-08:002010-02-17T10:23:38.550-08:00
Welcome Wednesday!

So should I feel the role of a failure now or move on and ignore the fact that I disappointed myself?

Ah to write, staring at a blank screen, the cursor blinking begging for the next letter. I'm waiting it cries. Bleep, Bleep.

Ahhh... :<) To write, a task I was expected to do the first 10 years of my adulthood. Read this book and respond and do it within this deadline. Actually, this is my experience with writing since I learned to do so. Respond to this statement I created, read this book or choose from this list of books and respond. Yet now that I have my time, my opportunity to express - I'm at a loss.

I married in 95. Well I first married in 91 - at 19 and then divorced that legalized connection in 92. I didn't read or write that whole year. As 92 came and went I started to read again. I read simple stories, harlequin, you know the sort. A great love story to help you escape they daily humdrum and heartache. I grew tired of that sort of reading and enrolled in school and was accepted - shocker for me! For the next 10 years it was read this and respond. Of course I had a choice, to some degree, I chose my major - 3 times :<). I chose some of the elective choices within the major but for the most part my choices were made for me. REad and respond. I did in a mediocre fashion. Sometimes I found a passionate argument to write down but once the class was over the passion dimmed. Upon graduation and a second enrollment towards a graduate degree and more reading and responding I started teaching. I found new arguments and new passions to read and respond about but that too dimmed. Now I have free time. It's what I wanted. Time to write. Time to read what I want.

It took me awhile after this forced reading and responding to pick up a book and it's taken much longer for me to pick up a pen. Actually, I haven't picked up the pen. I've thought about search 2nd hand stores for an old typewriter, just for the experience...ah the blog...

My grandma passed away last year. About 5 years ago she started sending books home with my husband and myself when we visited. My husband was never much of a reader. Thanks to my grandma - well both grandmas - he reads daily. Mormonism for caught his interest. A critical look into that is. And then he discovered the White Indian Series. I can't remember who read the first book. I think he'd read the first and maybe the second or 3rd and talked me into it and then somehow I pushed ahead in the series. I'm a faster reader. I made it up to 18 or 19 he's well past me now. It's a great series that provides and alternative perspective of the American Revolution and up through the trail of tears. Not sure where it ends, not sure where the truth lies but it's a good story and makes you question, makes you want to learn more, research more.

My husband recently began re-reading the series me, I've moved on. This past year I've followed characters created by Susan Wigg - love her recipes and her reasoning for providing them within her stories, Iris Johansen - she shocked me with her description of the rape and pillage of the French Jacobins. ...I was on an Ann Rule kick for awhile but I'm overly sensitive to true crime stories. And now...

My latest story and the reason for this blog post.

Secrets About LIfe Every Woman Should Now. I've opened the book and read some of the acknowledgments that's about it. I discovered this book from another Etsy seller. She shared the inspiration and peace she felt form reading this book. I've been reading this past year to ease the anxiety, loneliness and depression brought on my the death of my grandparents and uncle, life in a new town, new state, the struggle to raise 3 boys and the new experience of living apart from my ever traveling spouse.

So, Barbara De Angelis, SALEWSK - (Secrets About Life....). The author writes about relationships I've learned from the acknowledgments and first few pages. Perfect right up my communicative ally. You see my colleague Jerry likes to pull me into his class to help facilitate the "relationship" section of his Com 101 class. Little does he know, I have know idea what a relationship is. ? Do you? Ya think so huh? Lol

This book, in particular, SALEWSK, Secrets, is about an intrapersonal relationship - a relationship with your "self." Hmm..also up my introspective ally - lol. If your up for an emotional spiritual journey, stick around and let's see what this book is about. Hope to write soon but in the meantime - pick up the book and share your comments. Try not to get too ahead of me - and please don't give away the ending. :<)

Ah - so nice to not have to worry about grammatically boundaries :<)Amievoltairehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04500278670109123501noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4726878218693564974.post-71203349867614554652010-01-21T04:34:00.000-08:002010-01-21T04:34:53.839-08:00
"Technology is about Attitude not Age"

(quoted from Handmadeology)
I'm still flabbergasted and not sure why.

My goal for 2009 was to build up my Etsy store and to write a little on my blog each day. Well I focused heavily on advertising my Etsy store and am please with my success. In less than a year of more intense promotions I have welcomed a fair amount of return customers and am building a profitable relationship with a nice Louisiana Boutique who is buying wholesale from me. I'm pleased with my stores growth but realize the success did occur at the expense of my daily writing goal.

So my question for 2010 is how can I achieve that daily writing goal while continuing to improve my store's success and given my children's needs for my attention. To begin I'm going to take baby steps and start with 1 day a month for two Months - Sunday and see how that works. On March 7th I will work up to Two days a week and go from there.

Now, what have I been doing lately. I moved my 7 year old from a heavily funded public school to a technology focus charter school. The opportunity arose in December and with a little hesitation I jumped. My son fought a bit the first week. He clearly misses his friends and teacher. Let me add that his teacher will be leaving for maternity leave for the rest of the year beginning in February so he would have experience some upheaval next month anyway. Mr. "I refuse to be happy about this situation," has tried hard not to show his enjoyment of this school but I know the school is making his education more interesting. We'll see what the future holds.

Have a great week! A new study from the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center found that children now have more risk factors for heart disease than their parents. Our kids are now more likely to have a heart attack at some time during their lives than we are!

The major reason for this increased risk is the significantly increased rate of obesity among children. Studies show that children today have a significantly higher body mass index (BMI) than children in the past. Even more disturbing, they also have increased mass in their left heart ventricles, a known risk factor for both heart attacks and strokes.

This study supports what the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has been saying for the past few years; pediatricians and parents MUST start screening kids for obesity and taking action immediately. We can no longer wait until our children “grow out of their baby fat”. Unfortunately, today’s kids keep their baby fat and continue to add to it throughout their lives. Without some sort of intervention, our children will continue to eat themselves to death.

One major hindrance to treating overweight children is that parents and pediatricians often fail to recognize that a child is overweight. Our country’s perception of normal is completely skewed; we have lost sight of what a child is supposed to look like. Studies show that the majority of parents of obese children consider their kids “normal weight”. In fact, some of these parents labeled their kids as “underweight”.

We must look at the facts and ignore our preconceived notions of what is a normal weight for a child. The body mass index (BMI) percentile is the best way to screen a child for obesity.

Pediatricians use BMI percentiles to determine if a child is overweight or obese. BMI is a measure of body weight relative to height. You can’t determine if a child is overweight without considering the child’s height. For example, is a child who weighs 90 pounds overweight? That depends. That child would be overweight if he were three feet tall but would not be overweight if he were five feet tall. BMI tells us how appropriate a child’s weight is for his height and is a better measure of body fatness than body weight.

With adults, BMI interpretation is very cut and dry. A BMI between 25and30 is considered overweight, between 30 and35 is considered obese, and between 35 and40 is considered morbidly obese.

It is not so simple for children. Children at different stages of growth and development are expected to have different amounts of body fat. At some stages of childhood they should have more body fat and at other stages of childhood they should have less.

To decide if a child is overweight or obese, we look at a child’s BMI percentile. That is, we compare a child’s BMI to the BMIs of all children of the same age and gender. We then see how the child compares to his peers.

What does it mean if a child is in the 88th percentile? A child whose BMI is in the 88th percentile has a BMI that is greater than 88% of all children of the same age and gender. This child is in the overweight category.

A BMI between the 85th and 95th percentiles is considered overweight; between the 95th and 99th percentiles is considered obese; above the 99th percentile is considered morbidly obese.

Parents should ask their pediatricians about their child’s BMI percentile at each well child visit. If your child’s BMI is greater than the 85th percentile, you must take action immediately to minimize your child’s risk of a heart attack and to maximize your child’s lifespan. Do not wait to intervene!

Though he’s a respected sprite that shows up in English folklore, Jack is a mysterious figure in the sense that no one knows exactly where he originates from. Two of the most popular guesses are Scandinavian Mythos (this one suggests that he might be connected to a frost giant named Jokti) and Russian Mythos (where it is thought that he might be connected to Father Frost). Though Jack is the personification of the spirit of Winter as are the others, he has a much milder manner. It’s my personal belief that this is because Winters are somewhat milder here in England.
Standing at just 2 ½ feet and dressed in a clear costume covered with icicles, Jack is one of many sprites that has weather control. He’s only limited in the sense that he can only use his powers during the Winter months. The rest of the year he lives with the rest of the Winter Court in Faery.
Though he brings about the Winter chill, Jack is far from being an aggressive sprite. Providing that you’re properly prepared for the Winter, he is actually quite playful. He enjoys both the reaction and the shocked energy he receives from people when he randomly nips their nose, fingers, or toes on a cold night. It’s said if you’re quite sensitive and listen very carefully that you can hear his peals of laughter as he goes about this game.
Not only is he a top notch prankster but a matchless artist. The intricate designs that he paints with ice on windowpanes makes Michelangelo himself appear but a mere amateur.
This year as you celebrate your Winter holidays be on the lookout for the impish sprite known as Jack Frost. And if you wish to join him in his merry making, take a walk down the street on a cold frosty morning and admire his handy work on windows and car windshields. Marvel at the intricacy and differences of the icy patterns. Then when you’re finished go home and drink a hot drink in his honour.
